Each year, EMS providers responded to more than 1,564,000 calls for assistance and support throughout Virginia. The nearly 36,000 EMS professionals serving the Commonwealth ensure the health and safety of our communities. The EMS Strong 5K began in southwest Virginia as a way to recognize the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line". The event promotes EMS provider the health and wellness by encouraging providers to include exercise as part of their own personal wellness routine. In addition, the event raises public awareness by honoring the men and women of America’s EMS systems who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Over the years, our 5K has expanded to recognize the contributions of Fire, Law Enforcement, and other first responders who are our partners in keeping our communities safe. Due to COVID-19, our regular event (usually held during EMS Week) was canceled by the host town. This year, we have chosen to continue our recognition of Virginia’s First Responders by hosting a Virtual 5K that will allow us to expand the program to all of Virginia. The virtual run can be completed during the week of September 6-12. This time frame was chosen because to include September 11, which has been designated as First Responders Day in Virginia.
